Engage is a word that is used often with associations and it is one of the most important words we have as association executives. It is the goal we have for every member that signs up to join NALS. We want you to engage the association. This is the only way you will be able to get your money's worth, and we want you to get your money's worth! Associations do not want you to just give us money and not participate in what we have to offer. We truly want you to use every offering we have to its fullest. We want you to feel like you are getting one over on us because it is such a great value. We want you to feel like you have the greatest network of professionals on the planet for the low cost of membership. We want you to attend every CLE session we have to offer and we want you to come to every conference and meeting so you can learn and have fun. So how do we get you to be a "power user" of NALS?

That is the magic question. We can't force you to engage...we can only make it as easy and comfortable as possible for you to engage and become a part of this wonderful organization that has been engaging legal professionals for 80 years. That is right...80 years. We welcome you to the history, and to the experience that this brings to the table and we want you to add to it.

One of the ways that NALS is on the forefront in engagement is through social media. The number of people using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Ning are staggering. 300 million are using Facebook today and the number is only growing. NALS is present on Facebook to give you an easy way to become engaged while using a medium you are comfortable. We have over 800 people in our Facebook Group using this means to discuss topics of their choice, connect with other legal professionals, and keep up with everything going on at NALS. We also have a group of nearly 900 using our LinkedIn group for a more professional approach to social media. Our Twitter following is growing everyday and is currently getting close to 500. On Twitter you can not only follow NALStweet but you can use this list to follow other NALS members and this list to follow other Legal Professionals. We are trying to make this as easy as possible for you so that you can focus on engaging and getting the most for your money!

So what are you waiting for? If there is another way that you would like us to engage you as a member please let us know. We are here for you and because of you so use us...we like it.

ASAE was great!

Well most of the NALS staff just got back from our American Society of Association Executives conference and it was great! Toronto was a nice city and welcomed us well. We all learned a great deal in our sessions and I will try and find the time over the next few weeks to share some of it with you.

I wanted to start out by sharing some information on social media and social networking. We all know what Facebook is and surely everyone has heard about Twitter and LinkedIn. NALS is on the forefront in using these social media outlets to help stay connected to members and help them become engaged with the association. Our hope is that by having a presence on these networking tools we will be able to be there for you where ever you may be online. We understand that many people use the web for different things and we want to try and accommodate you. I have to say that I am pleased by the response that we have had to these tools and I think that you can utilize them for your chapters as well. I am not saying that everyone needs to start tweeting today but at least give it a thought...who knows you might have some fun!

You are welcome to use the NALS Community to set up a group for your state and chapter to start and you can see how we are using forums and blogs to not only get information to members but to interact with them on a personal level even though we are no where near one another. You can talk about what books you are ready, what shows you are watching, or even something about work...if you want to. From there you can start conversations in the NALS facebook group about up coming events in your chapter or anything else you can think of (with in reason). There is no need to dive head first into all aspects of social media...but you need to start getting your feet wet because pretty soon we will all be swimming in it and those that are used to the water will not be nearly as shocked!

I recommend setting up a twitter account and if nothing else follow @NALStweet, @LawMagazine, @Letter10 and @NALShailey and see what we have to say! You will quickly figure out some things and find some people you want to follow. You will undoubtedly get some messages from people you want nothing to do with but you can block them and move on. Twitter grew from 450K users to 11 million users in one year so there are a lot of people out there, the beauty of it is that it is very easy to ignore the ones that you don't care about. Get on and take a look you can't break it!

Well that is about it...I am going to try and make a better effort at updating this for you.

Haven't Posted in a while!

I am sorry about the lack of posts...seems hard to make the time to do them with all the other things that are going on. NALS has been doing a lot of social networking through Facebook and Twitter. Follow us @NALStweet and @LawMagazine on twitter for updates on things and deadline reminders.

Do you use these methods for you local chapters? Why Not? They are FREE and there are a lot of members and potential members out there using them daily. Might as well give them a shot and see what happens with it...nothing to lose!

There a ton of things going on these days with NALS! I made a similar blog post over on the NALS Community but I am going to gear this one more to how you can help NALS market itself and help make the new products and programs even better!

As many of you know last night was the first WebEd webinar session and it was a great success! We have also announced the topic of our second session and it will be held during the afternoon trying to reach those that can't attend the evening sessions. As you guys can see from the registration form being a NALS member will save you some cash on these sessions. These sessions are top notch and are on the same level of the presentations you would see at one of our conferences. These are going to become more frequent and will vary on times and topics. Along with these we are continuing our free Online Learning Center sessions. These sessions along with our conferences and meetings across the country provide a good base of CLE for all members! Take some time to invite your co-workers to these sessions! Also contact for potential group discounts if you want to try and get a group together in your office to attend the next WebEd session!

The next big step we have taken over the last few months has been our dive into social networking! Hopefully you all know about our NALS Community as it has grown to 350 members. We also have a Facebook Group with over 500 and a LinkedIn network over 500 so it is as easy as ever to utilize your NALS membership to build a solid networking chain. We also jumped in the Twitter train and you can follow us at NALStweet on twitter to see updates and get reminders of what is going on with NALS.

The third big step we took is not nearly as exciting for you guys as it is for us. We recently went live with a new Member Login area which will allow you to edit your personal information directly on our database to help us make sure our information is as up to date as it can be. You can also use this as a directory to find members around the country and get in touch with them. The new functionality also includes a new e-commerce area which features a new shopping cart and it will make registering for things and purchasing store items.

We are trying to do all that we can to make membership in NALS as valuable as we can and we need your help to spread the word! NALS does not want to spend your dues money on advertising, we would rather spend it on great new features for you to enjoy but we do need your help so that we can grow our membership and continue to provide top-notch programs for you to take advantage of.

if you have been thinking big and have a good way to do this please leave it in the comment area for everyone to see!

do you Twitter?

I know you have probably heard about Twitter and maybe even are posting tweets of you own. For those of you that don't know what Twitter is, it is basically a way for you to post the things that you are doing each day so that those friends, family or colleagues that care can follow things that you do. A "tweet" is a post to Twitter, and these tweets are really just miniature blog posts (limited to 140 characters) and are informal ideas, thoughts, or goings on in peoples lives.

NALS is on Twitter now and you can sign up and follow us by going to We will be using this as a marketing tool to keep those following us up to date with what is going on with NALS. We will be posting reminders for deadlines, sneak peak info on events and meetings, updates to the website and other fun tidbits that we think will be interesting to those that are following us.

Why am I telling you this? Well a lot of people twitter...millions of people twitter...and I am not joking! You too can be a part of this information stream and can set up a twitter for your chapters to use as a way for your members to keep up with what is new and changing. It is as simple as updating your tweets and you can set up most mobile phones so you can update them from anywhere. They are short, sweet and to the point and are a FREE and easy way to keep people updated. And they can become quite fun!

At first I didn't understand the point either but now I check my tweets often and I see how the can be really beneficial to states and chapters if their members are on twitter or are willing to sign up and check so they can see what is going on...all the time!

The Marketing Blog is Back!

Okay...Tulsa is done and it was a great conference! I will be committed to updating this blog more often now...I will need some help however.

I NEED COMMENTS! This will help me understand what it is that you need from this blog and how I can make it serve you the way you need it to. I want to know what you think about what is said and whether or not you think it is important to you.

I want to use this as a way to help you "Think Big" and also use this as a place for people to bounce ideas off one another.

New NALS Community

Well hopefully you guys have noticed and joined the ALL NEW NALS Community! This version is way more user friendly and should help combat the spam that was taking over the previous version. We are using a free service called Ning to host the community. You too can use Ning to host your own social network...might be a good idea to use this for your local and state chapters. They even have a chat feature that you can add and use to meet and discuss things. I don't think you can get a transcript but it would still be a good way to bounce ideas off of one another without anyone having to travel or call someone.

Check out the NALS Community here:

P.S. Leave me some comments so I know if anyone is reading this!

I am so sorry!

I have neglected my blogs! I want to apologize for this and I hope to get back into a regular posting schedule to keep things up to date. Please if there is something specific you would like me to touch on, post it in the comments and I will see what I can come up with!
